Shocking.  That’s how my spreadsheets used to look.  I would try to integrate colour into my Excel implementations to make them look distinctive.  But something wasn’t working.  The colours didn’t quite match.  It felt like a hot mess … 

After a decade of creating Excel applications for customers across the world, I’m happy to say I’ve come to terms with colour in spreadsheets!  By which I mean, over time and through necessity and dozens of repetitions, I’ve developed a simple method for creating colour schemes that work in Excel … every time.  And they don’t just work, people tend to think they look great.  For many, attractive colour in Excel is a real ‘wow’ factor – and it could be a way to make your spreadsheet work stand out, too.

So, how to start?  Well, it all starts with your organization logo.  Using a colour picker tool, you can figure out the exact main colour in the logo by identifying what’s called a ‘Hex’ code.  This is the key to replicating the colour in Excel.  Then, once you ‘lock in’ this base colour to an online colour scheme generator, you can easily find 2-3 complementary colours which will form the basis of your colour scheme.  There you go – colours in Excel, solved! 

Well, almost.  In the video, I explain how I use a ‘format store’ to set up and store spreadsheet colour formats.  From there, it’s simple to copy / paste formats into the user interface worksheets as and when you need them, as I demonstrate in the video.  Too easy!
