Excel Dashboards For Beginners
Ok, so when did you last see a good Excel Dashboard? By ‘good’, I mean one that tells the story of the data, is visually appealing, and has some interactive features that allow you to ‘slice and dice’ the data? One that has a ‘cool’ factor … but is also practical. OK, let me re-phrase the question – have you ever seen a good Excel dashboard?

If you’re anything like me, you don’t see good Excel dashboards often. It’s always surprised me. Dashboard-building should not be the preserve of Excel specialists, ‘IT Guys’ or computer programmers. Yes, I can build a good Excel dashboard and I’ve built dozens over the years. But, Excel is designed to make cool visual analyses possible for the average professional. All the tools to create a dashboard are readily available. So why don’t we see them more often?
I think there are two issues at play. One we’ll deal with in today’s session and the other we won’t – but we’ve dealt with it, at beginner and advanced level, many times on the channel. The first issue is awareness … and basic competence (sorry!) The fact is the average professional can’t build a pivot table with confidence. Pivot tables are important because they open the door to pivot charts, slicers, timelines and other cool, visual and interactive features that are a real ‘wow’ factor in Excel spreadsheets. We cover all of these in today’s session.
The other issue has to do with data quality. I create datasets for our Excel tutorial sessions that can feel contrived because the data quality is … perfect. What’s data quality? Well, if there aren’t any spelling mistakes, blank cells or errors in your data, you have high data quality. The truth is, most datasets these days have low data quality. This means data cleansing is needed – so how to do that? I’ve linked to our best beginner and advanced videos on the topic below.
