Frustrated With Recorded Macros In Excel VBA? HERE'S HOW TO IMPROVE THEM

I love the macro recorder in Excel! Yesterday in 30 Day Excel Analyst, we experienced its unique power. The way it generates code makes it an essential learning tool if you’re getting started with Excel VBA. In the previous session, we managed to record some code, locate it in the VBA editor, attach it to a button and run it with a button click. Cool!

The thing about VBA, however, is a job never feels ‘done’. That’s because, every accomplishment raises new possibilities: ‘If I can do that, can I do this?’ Perhaps, after a brief punch-the-air moment last time, you quickly began thinking about how to improve things further. Perhaps we could change the sort mode from ascending to descending, for example? Get the routine to work for different sized datasets? Or even sort multiple datasets across different sheets …?

In this session, we’ll focus on how to improve recorded code to give it the power and flexibility required to really have an impact on your work. Throughout this week, we’ll focus on 5 areas of VBA learning: working with cells, working with variables, controlling position, implementing loops and creating conditionality. By building in some ‘organic’ structures (meaning syntax you type into the VBA editor yourself) around the recorded code, we can dramatically increase the utility of this macro.

Make sure you download the Excel file and work along with me to start building your skills and confidence in Excel automation. Welcome back to 30 Day Excel Analyst!
