Today’s session is the last in data management week.  We’ve discussed various ways to manage data in Excel, explored the power of each, and considered the pros and cons.  We’ve felt the power of tools such as Power Query.  Sometimes, however, the best approach is to keep a spreadsheet ‘lean-and-mean’, using only of rudiments of Excel to solve problems.  So, what options do Excel formulae afford us when it comes to data management in Excel?

In this session, I’ll demonstrate a lean-and-mean approach to data cleansing using only Excel formulae.  We’ll look at four typical data cleansing problems that you’ll encounter frequently as an Excel analyst, and consider how to use Excel formulae to solve each.  As you’ll see, Excel formulae pack a punch when applied correctly, offering a useful option when you don’t wish to go into the Power Query interface or VBA Editor.  I undertake the majority of my data cleansing tasks using only the formulae we’ll use in the session - I hope you’ll add them to your Excel toolkit.

We’ll also consider the topic of capacity management in Excel.  Datasets are always changing with rows being added and removed – so how should we manage that in Excel?  Tables are the most obvious way and we’ll look at how to set one up in this session.
